Here’s some more details about the FNTG annual Rail-Trail clean-up, SATURDAY, April 14th from 9 to noon.

We are seeking volunteers of all ages to help pick-up the trash (and recycling) along our wonderful trails. Spring is the best time to see and collect a winter’s worth of trash, and studies have shown that if people don’t see trash they are far less likely to add more trash on trails and public spaces. Our few hours of collective clean-up efforts make a difference! Please volunteer a few hours of your time and bring your friends, spouse, or kids too!

We’ve got leaders helping at the following locations starting at 9:00 am. They will have bags to distribute and can point you in the right direction:

    – Downtown: Please meet John in the parking lot behind the Hall of Deeds at 33 King Street

    – Jackson Street: Please meet Heather on the trail under the Bridge at Jackson Street

    – Leeds: Please meet George at the intersection of Mulberry Street and the trail.

    – Grove Street: Please meet Celeste at the intersection of Grove and Earl Street

    – Under South Street Bridge: Please look for Jane or Jane

    – Taco Bell: Look for Amanda on the trail by the Taco Bell on King Street

    – Union Station: That’s where you will find Jasper working.

Some other things to know about the Trail Clean-up:

    1. In the past, the Rail Trail Clean-up has collected about a ton of trash, including: a water soaked broken guitar and case, a broken bike tire, a rusted tool-box, seven shopping carts, four car tires, and a ripped trampoline. I wonder what we might find this year?

    2. We are using the following system: BLACK garbage bags for TRASH and WHITE plastic bags for RECYCLING. This way we can send less to the land-fill.

    3. Please remember to stay on the trails, and do not collect trash from the private property or train tracks.

    4. If you see things that need attention (like graffiti that needs to be painted over) please keep a note of it and let your trail leader know, or email me at jriseman@mac.com.

    5. Please move bags of trash and recycling bags to intersections where we can pick it up with a truck and take it to the transfer station.

    6. I have a special request for some volunteers with a bike and trailer to help move full bags to the intersections where they can get pick-up.

    7. Thank you so much for all your helping hands! Our trails need much less help this year because you and many others in Northampton keep picking up trash all year round! I am proud to live in a city where so many people take care of our trails all year round.
