I’m writing to encourage you to consider helping the local trails in some capacity over the coming months. We founded the Friends of Northampton Trails and Greenways in 2006 to support the growing trail network,and partner with like-minded organizations (City of Northampton,Friends of the Manhan Rail Trail,MassBike,Help Yourself,Broad Brook Coalition, . . .  I’m very pleased to report that the City of Northampton,Northampton Business Improvement District,and Smith College have agreed to collaborate to clear snow from the new section of the Northampton Rail Trail. The following press release provides the details. Kudos to the Mayor,the Business Improvement District,Smith College and Hilary Caws-Elwitt and others . . . Please come join us on Wednesday,April 25th at 7:00pm for a planning committee (and newsletter mailing party!) for the Friends of Northampton Trails and Greenways. We’ll have updates on projects and plans for the future (including trail expansion updates,info on the Photo and Video contest,and upcoming tours),as well as some refreshments . . . Come join us and enjoy Spring,community,and the satisfaction of doing good for the environment and our city. The annual rail-trail clean-up is an enjoyable way to contribute a few hours of your time. You are invited to join us to brainstorm how to help keep the trails beautiful and accessible for everyone. The first-ever meeting of the ad-hoc Volunteer Trail Maintenance group is on:Wednesday,October 26th at 7 pm at Trailside Realty,14 Strong Avenue,Northampton. At this meeting we’ll plan the dates for the fifth annual . . . The Friends of Mineral Hills Conservation Area is organizing a trail-building day July 30,from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Volunteers are asked to meet in the parking area for the Mineral Hills area,located on Sylvester Road about a quarter mile north of its intersection with West Farms,Turkey Hill,Ryan and Sylvester roads. . . . The Friends of Northampton Trails and Greenways selected Smith College as the recipient of our Trail Neighbor award for 2011. This distinction is given annually to an individual,family,or organization that works on behalf of the Northampton rail trail network. . . . Just in time for Bike Week (see here for a complete listing),we’ve made our new map and brochure as well as summer newsletter available (click here to download). There’s lots happening this week. Wednesday,May 18th is the Northampton Bike Breakfast,on the courthouse lawn. Smith College will be receiving our trail neighbor award . . . Come join us on Saturday,April 30th from 9:30am-noon for a City-wide trail cleanup. . . .
